2018 SLFPD Chipping Grant

Residents in the Sugarloaf Fire Protection District (SLFPD) can get slash chipping at a reduced rate through a grant from Boulder County that is enhanced by SLFPD. Three community chipping events are scheduled for this year: June 5, July 15, and Oct. 1. (These dates are an approximation of when chipping begins.) Slash will be chipped and chips broadcast on the property, and chips will land not far from the slash pile. In other words, it’s best to pile slash far from the house or other structure.

Pile slash with butt ends toward the road in a location accessible to a pickup pulling a trailer. Slash must include no branches larger than 4” diameter (2—3” or less is better). Stumps, roots, or anything with dirt, fence-wire or other hardware cannot be chipped, as these things damage the sharp knives of the chipper.

Cost of chipping

On properties that have had a Wildfire Partners (WP) assessment, WP will pay the first two hours ($100/hr). Additional hours will bill at $75/hr, with SLFPD covering the other $25/hr. Properties not enrolled in WP will bill at $50/hr, with Boulder County and SLFPD each
paying $25/hr.

The Boulder County Community Sort Yard is another option for disposing of slash or other tree material—AT NO COST. The sort yard, 291 Ridge Rd., Nederland, is open Weds. through Sat., 9 a.m.—5 p.m. Slash, logs, wood chunks, etc. are accepted, with certain restrictions. The sort yard is open May 2 to October 13.  www.BoulderCountyOpenSpace.org/sortyard

Wildfire Partners

SLFPD encourages landowners to enroll in Wildfire Partners, the county’s excellent program
that works to reduce fire risk to any foothills property, and shares the cost of forestry work. The
assessment fee of $100 is waived during April & May 2018 (except in cases where the
assessment is required for a building permit). For WP assessments completed by May 31,
2018, participants will be eligible for a financial award of 50% of forestry work up to $2,500.
